The Properties and Health Benefits of Biotin

A little known Vitamin in the B complex is Biotin, although it is sometimes called Vitamin H. Biotin is a comparitively recent addition to the vitamin family, only being acepted into the fold in the 1970's.

Perhaps one of the reasons that Biotin had not been well documented and studied earlier was the fact that any deficiency in Biotin is rare, as the body quite easily finds enough Biotin in the diet. However, deficiency does occur sometimes, and symptoms include fine hair, fungal infections, dry skin, hair loss and rashes. If not treated, then mild depression, muscular pains and changes in the mental state of the sufferer can occur. Other possible results from Biotin deficiency are being studied, including cot death

Biotin's primary role seems to be as a partner to 4 enzymes, which require Biotin to perform their role efficiently. That role includes the synthesis of fatty acids and in producing glucose, and the production of leucine, which is one of the essential amino acids.

There have been recent studies which have given some indication that biotin has a role both in the transcription and replication of DNA. Additionally, biotin is thought to be necessary for the proper functining of the nervous system. Biotin has also been associated with producing eurotransmitters in the brain.

Natural Sources of Biotin

Many foods contain Biotin, helping to ensure that deficiency in this little known B vitamin rarely occurs in healthy individuals. Mests, especially organ meats, are a rich source of Biotin, but plant foods tend to contain less.

Biotin is passed quickly through the body into urine, so the body requires regular daily replenishment. However, for most people, that is not a problem.

One of the areas of interest for Biotin followers is in its role in hair loss. While it may be true that lack of sufficient Biotin can lead to hair loss, there is no firm evidence that the same substance can cure baldness, other than hair loss caused by deficiency.
