The Health Benefits of Calcium

While vitamin C has always been the best known vitamin, calcium has for a long time been the best known mineral. Even as a very young child, I can recall getting that daily school milk back in England, and being aware it had something to do with calcium.

The best known reasons for us needing calcium are to strengthen bones and teeth. However, calcium has a number of other benefits too:

1. Calcium has a role in blood clotting;

2. Calcium is essential to the nerves and muscles to perform efficiently;

3. Calcium is also important in the maintenance of cell membranes

Despite the obvious and well known need for calcium, as many as 3/4 of the American population do not have an adequate intake of calcium in their diets. Those on vegan and vegetarian diets are most vulnerable to calcium deficiency.

So, how can someone get the right amount of calcium to keep the bones, teeth, and rest of the body adequately supplied? We all know milk is a good source of calcium, along with the dairy products made from milk. However, there are many more, including nuts and seeds, seaweeds, molasses, broccoli, and oranges. It is also worth checking some fortified drinks, which sometimes have calcium added.

Many of us take calcium supplement, either singly or as part of a multi vitamin and mineral supplement. Adults are thought to need about 1000mgs of calcium a day, up to 1300mg. Some types of calcium supplements better absorbed by the body than the others. However, some may be preferable for other reasons. The most familiar calcium supplements are calcium carbonate, calcium citrate, coral calcium, oyster shell or bone meal based calcium supplements, and calcium gluconate or calcium lactate based supplements.

In view of the problems too much calcium can cause, it is essential to get the balance right, and this is best done through a nutritional expert.
