Health Benefits and Properties of Iron

The mineral iron is an absolute essential to human health, and it is especially important in pregnant women and adolescent girls, as well as infants. Women generally require a higher amount of iron than men, due to their reproductive biology and menstruation cycle.

Iron is essential to both sexes, though, and deficiencies can lead to loss of energy, decline in overall health, and even serious illness. It is therefore important to get enough iron in the diet. This can be achieved through eating plenty of fruits, such as strawberries, avocado, banana, kiwi, grapes and tomatoes, as well as common vegetables like sweet potato, corn, carrots, broccoli and peas.

Iron is utilized by the body in several ways. Firstly, it plays a part in oxygenating the blood, which is a vital role. Another essential role of iron is in energy metabolism. Iron also plays a key part in the neurodevelopment of babies as they grow.

Iron also promotes the functioning of the body’s immune system, whcih is critical to overall good health. In particular it assists in the production of the white blood cells which are key to fighting infection and disease. We all need iron for our bodies to absorb the B vitamins.

Women especially have to watch their iron levels, particualrly during their child bearing years, as the good health, growth and development of their babies depend on it. Menstruation blood loss is another time to watch ion levels, and it may be wise to take an ion supplement during the period. If in doubt about your ion levels, a medical laboratory will test for you, or ask your doctor to arrange the test, depending what the system is in your country.

Deficiencies in iron can cause a variety of problems, notably anemia, which can result in fatigue and lack of concentration. Oxygen is a life giving essential to the human body, in all parts, so iron has a vital role in ensuring it reaches every part of your body from head to toe.
