The Possible Health Benefits of Vitamin E
Vitamin E is a much studied vitamin, thought by many to have numerous roles in maintaining good health, and even preventing or helping to prevent chronic diseases such as heart disease and cancer. However, there are many more years of studies to come before there is a comprehensive and fully understood appraisal of the true benefits of vitamin E in its different forms.
One attribute of vitamin E that is widely accepted is that it is a powerful antioxidant, capable of helping to protect cells from free radical damage, which can lead to heart disease and cancer. Vitamin E is also thought to have a role in repairing DNA, and in maintaining the immune system.
Vitamin E occurs naturally in many nuts and vegetable oils, notably wheat germ oil, sunflower oil, walnut oil, peanuts, asparagus, corn and coconut, plus many others. However, recent studies have shown that most people in the US, for example, do not get enough vitamin E in their natural diet.
Supplementation with vitamin E is therefore common, and can come in many forms, both synthetic and semi-natural/synthetic. Naturopaths tend to argue that the wholly synthetic vitamin E supplements can have no effect on cancer or heart disease, whereas the supplements with natural vitamin E can.
When it comes to the major benefits of vitamin E, studies are not yet conclusive. While observational studies have suggested that higher vitamin E intake may reduce the risk of heart disease, the randomized studies that have so far taken place have not confirmed that claimed benefit.
There is a similar lack of conclusive evidence when it comes to vitamin E and cancers. However, there is little doubt that vitamin E is a free radical scavenger, and that neutralizing free radicals in the body can lower cell damage and reduce the risk of cancer. Vitamin E has, at various times, been claimed to reduce the risk of prostate cancer, breast cancer and lung cancer in male smokers, but there is a great deal more scientific study to be done to reach conclusions.
